After going way too long without any live music on the porch, we figured it was time to bring it back.
Sonny’s Porch has always been a place for traveling musicians to take a break from the hustle of touring and just hang for a while. Doesn’t really matter to us whether they decide to play an entire set or opt for some impromptu jamming—if they're having a good time, we’re stoked.
Beyond his talent as a musician, Ray Barbee is also one of the pioneers of skateboarding and helped lay the groundwork for what street skating is today. We grew up watching his video parts on repeat (just watch ‘Ban This’) and still can’t get over his No Comply. And while a lot has changed since his days on the Bones Brigade, the one thing that seems to only get better with time is his smooth, casual style in everything he does.
There are a few of us here that are low key mega fans. So, when we heard that he and Chuck Treece (also a legend in skateboarding and a phenomenal drummer) were on their way to Hotel Palms for a show in Jacksonville, we asked if they were up for making a pitstop in Cocoa Beach for the day. They said they were down, and we tried our best to play it cool. Lucky for us, Ray and Chuck are some of the kindest, most down to earth humans we’ve ever met. They made our comeback to the porch something we’ll be talking about for a while.
When they showed up at our office, it was 90 degrees in the shade. So, as much as we wanted to skate around town with them and fulfill our childhood dreams, we headed to the beach instead.
